Britain's Got Talons

Well, it's been a gripping week. Our government's in melt-down, we've got so cross with some of our less than honourable politicians that several of them have been forced out of office, the Prime Minister could possibly be dusting off his suitcases and ordering the removal van for some time next week, I guess, and the vultures are circling over the Houses of Parliament, barely waiting for the juiciest carcasses to draw their last gasp expenses cheque before tearing them to shreds and speculating upon the new pecking order.

Crikey.

Who'd have thought that "the court of public opinion" would have produced so many hanging judges? Is this what happens when we, the public, dig our claws in? Has our anger really made this happen? It seems that everywhere you go - the hairdressers, supermarket, restaurant or pub, the talk is about one thing and one thing only - the expenses scandal. I don't think I've seen people so stirred up about anything as much as this, ever. And it shows no signs of abating any time soon.

I am quite stunned by it all, to be honest.

So what on earth's going to happen next? What do YOU want to happen next? For the first time in ages, I feel as if we have a say in what happens next, so what shall we ask for?

I hope there'll be a general election.
Mr Brown was never voted in and he seems to be bumbling about like a bee that has been trapped against a window & knows it is doomed.
Is there anyone better? God only knows, but we MUST vote!

Mmmm - what DO we want? Let's see. Dump the House of Lords and have a 2nd elected chamber; get rid of every single existing MP who claimed inappropriately on expenses and ban them from standing ever again; galvanise all the people we know who are sensible and honest to stand as independents; reintroduce politics and genuine debate, not party politics, to the house of commons; make Betty Boothroyd queen; introduce proportional representation; have a poke about to see if socialism is hiding in a wee corner and bring it out into the sunlight; set up government owned flats for MPs whose constituencies are more than 50 miles outside of London which they can't buy or pay mortgages on and can only use for their term in office; centralise employment of staff - want your husband to be your secretary? Fine, someone will interview him alongside all the other candidates and make the best choice; nationalise the banks and utilities properly and permanently - we need ONE bank, ONE water company, ONE train company etc, no choice but fantastic service responsive to consumer demand. I could (no doubt will) go on and on and on.

I can't imagine where this is going. I think the queen needs to step in. And no, I don't mean you....

Maggie May: Vote we must! At least this sorry situation has brought more public involvement with politics, which has to be a good thing. Every black cloud......etc

Mopsa, please DO go on, you are talking incredible sense. I'd vote for you, so how about it?

Hello Travelling, I think I'd be a great queen but at the moment there'd be helluva lot of "orf with their heads".

Parliament is being softened up for the EU push.

Can it be possible that the masses finally have a say in how our country is run??

At least our voice is finally being heard.

Good on Britain! Finally showing some independence and the fact we do have a voice. Hurrah!

One thing I noticed when I went to the polling station last Thursday; I had to QUEUE to cast my vote. That has to be a good sign. Perhaps at long last the great British public are awakening from their sleep of apathy.
VOX POPULI, VOX DEI.
The voice of the people ids the voice of God.

I feel ya. I've been hearing about this on NPR over here in the US. I sympathize as we have been going through our own upheavals for, oh, eight years, as you know (and still the mayhem continues in some sectors). We are audacious in our hope, however. I'll be interested about where this all leads you.

I'm well annoyed with those greedy tossers spending my parents money. That should be going to my dance fees!

I'm just a wee bit too young to vote but I wouldn't know who to vote for. They're all wearing grey hats.

Gosh, I was thinking "lucky you in UK" but now seeing our election result with the Govt. being decimated I'm also thinking "power to the people". Isn't democracy brilliant!

I LOVE reading about those bozos every single day. How disappointing they didn't have the balls to get rid of Gordon though.

I want honest, upstanding people representing us in parliament and working towards making a better Britain for all of us. Where they are going to come from, I don't know. It's quite sad that I don't feel represented or listened to in a country that takes a fifth of my income to redistribute as it wishes, which seems to be to the MPs themselves rather than to people who need it. I've never resented paying taxes as I felt that as a developed country we have a responsibility to ensure everyone is looked after by those who can look after themselves, now I'm feeling a little differently.

It's been quite a month, politically.

This may not be a popular comment, but..... If you took a bus queue of 10 people, 9 of them would be on the fiddle. The amount of benefit fraud in the UK makes the undeserved expenses claimed pale into insignificance. My builder has just finished my bathroom and asked for £1,500 in cash. That would be well over £2,000 of my hard earned, tax paid money. How many people can put their hand on their hearts and say they have NEVER fiddled or cheated on anything. Very few, including me. It's all a question of scale. This is all 18th century freak show stuff and we shouldn't be taken in by it.
Just an angle. Sorry for any offence.
