Am I Being Too Fussy?

I'm almost too embarrassed to tell you but I'm still in rainy Blighty, despite all of your fantastic travel tips for which I am eternally grateful. They all sound so great, but unfortunately I think we've left our run a wee bit too late. The travel agent surprised us by saying that there aren't that many late-deals around to the places we want to go to but can offer us hundreds of holidays which we don't really fancy. In fact, some of the deals on offer made me want to hide in the airing cupboard until next April. Top of his list was an "adult-only" holiday in a concrete village in Spain, all inclusive, as much as you can eat and drink with all night entertainment and escorted trips. Great if you like that's your sort of thing, but my personal idea of hell.

Next up was a Mediterraean cruise, ditto the above details but this time waking up in a different location every day with forty-five minutes or so ashore to "do" the area local to the port, then back on board and off to the next one. Sounded absolutely knackering, and thankfully I was able to use my claustrophobia as an excuse to say no thanks to an inside cabin deep in the bowels of the ship.

We could have gone to Egypt if only I'd had the jabs previously and the time to get them done before we set off. Not that I wanted to go to Egypt particularly anyway (no offence, Egypt), as my taste buds were working overtime for Italian food and culture at the time.

So here we are, still at home, with two weeks' holiday and as yet nowhere to go. And it's still pissing down.

I feel so stupid.

Remind me to book earlier next year.

You're not stupid SM.
You just don't want to end up spending your money on something you hate. That is not stupid. That seems perfectly sensible to me.
Egypt actually sounds ok, depending on the package, but it's the jabs. Don't go without jabs.

Why not get your thinking caps on for England eh? Yes the weather is foul. BUT what about giving yourselves a decent break in one of those "Centre Parks" sort of places? I have never been, and, like you would much prefer spending the money to get abroad, BUT, if you need to holiday now, it is an option. Alternatively (which is what I would do) just take a week off, cancel the other week, go back to work and book 2 weeks in October where I want to go.

So no, I do not think you are stupid. Late deals are great, if it is the holiday you want. But I would also consider the options you were given a living hell. Not a holiday.

It's actually the done thing nowadays not to go anywhere for your holidays but to stay home, becoming one of those people who care about their carbon foot print. So, you should feel good about that.

Oh Cath, thankyou. A voice of reason, thanks goodness.

And thanks for not thinking I'm stupid too.

Irene, thankyou too. You girls certainly know how to make a neurotic woman feel a whole lot better

Thankyou so much.

Why not take yourslves down to London for a few days? Bit of theatre, bit of culture? Bit of Champneys spa?

Or somewhere else where the rain doesn't matter so much? Bath, York? Chester?

Have a lovely time wherever you decide.

Maybe one of those pampering places where you can have all the beauty treatments and therapies that you want & come out feeling like a million dollars, would suit you & you might not have to travel far.

Don't ever go 'all-inclusive' and save cruising until you are at least seventy years old. These are but two of my travelling golden rules....

So, it seems that no holiday beckons? Seriously, get on the easyjet website, book yourself two tickets for tomorrow and just go.

You'll have an amazing time wherever you end up.

Your problem, I think, is that you are trying to save money and also find somewhere you want to go to. To heck with the money - splash out a bit and book that Italian food and culture holiday TODAY!

You can earn some extra money later or just economise - while you dream of the lovely holiday you've had!

There`s nowt like your own house, computer, writing books, catch up on phone calls and meeting up with pals. Just chill wherever you are, good company and plenty of quaffing of ale.

Yeah, what happened to the credit crunch and everyone taking staycations and there being loads of bargains to be had?

Let's not beat about the bush here. You are/were stupid :-)

But what to do? Sit at home and weep.

The holiday options sound like hell to me. I got stuck to a chair in Cairo once. Put me off Egypt for ever. That and the wine, fondly re-named Nefertiti's Armpit and Pharoah's Sandal. Maybe the UK will have an Indian Summer. (Look out, pigs...) VLiF

The holiday options sounded terrible so I think you were wise to say no.
By now I hope you are having fun - maybe even in Old Blighty? Even though it rained buckets all week for my visit last week it's still England - still FAB.

(and irene is right. we call it a "stay-cation."

whatever you do, you won't be wasting your time. two weeks of freedom is never a waste, no matter where you are.)
